The Usos, American Alpha & The Hype Bros def. Breezango, The Ascension & The Vaudevillains

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 027_SS_08212016ej_0129--25e4fd548e81af00c07cc43b1a152780

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — After weeks of taking a backseat to the American Alpha hype train, The Usos reasserted themselves by earning the decisive pinfall in SummerSlam Kickoff’s opening 12-Man Tag Team Match. So why aren’t they smiling?

The win should, by any indication, have been a windfall moment for Jimmy & Jey, the longest tenured duo of a SmackDown Live Tag Team division that is almost entirely comprised of tandems that were formed in WWE NXT (Breezango being the sole exception).

American Alpha has been by far the most heralded of the bunch, and the two-time WWE Tag Team Champion Usos were claiming as recently as last week that they weren’t quite ready, willing or Gable to cede the driver’s seat of the division.

So it’s understandable that the Slammy Award-heavy twins used this 12-Man Tag Team Match as an opportunity to make a statement, especially after Alpha scored the deciding pinfall in a similar content a few days earlier.

They did so after a bout that erupted into chaos rather quickly, with each tandem looking to position themselves as Team Blue’s top team.

At one point, The Ascension had cleared the ring until American Alpha sent them packing, and Aiden English of The Vaudevillains (who had taken the fateful Grand Amplitude on Tuesday) singlehandedly neutralized both grapplers.

When the action resumed, Zack Ryder was left to the mercy of Breezango, The Ascension and The Vaudevillains, who attempted to isolate the WrestleMania 32 miracle man from all 11 of his would-be saviors.

After taking an artillery’s worth of offense, Ryder finally managed to land a neckbreaker on Konnor and reach Jimmy Uso, who was quickly stopped short by Tyler Breeze.

Enter Jason Jordan, who delivered suplexes left and right until each Superstar rushed the ring to attack anyone and everyone who stood in his path.

When the dust cleared, Jordan and Gable managed to catch Simon Gotch in Grand Amplitude, only Jey Uso tagged himself in right before Gable could complete the maneuver.

Jey swooped in with a Frog Splash to steal the pin for himself, clearly marking his territory for the benefit of anyone who may have forgotten.

So, perhaps the reason he wasn’t smiling was because he felt The Usos had to prove themselves all over again.
Perhaps the reason Alpha wasn’t smiling was that it came at their expense.

Sami Zayn & Neville def. The Dudley Boyz

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 20160821_SumSlam_tagteam_kickoff--67a368d3929a2f64baba38c0c1702c41

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Following an action-packed Tag Team Match on the SummerSlam Kickoff, Sami Zayn & Neville are on the rise, while the most decorated tandem in history, The Dudley Boyz, may be on the outs.

For the second time this week, a miscommunication between Bubba Ray & D-Von Dudley proved costly for the brothers in camouflage.

Six days earlier, The Dudleys lost to WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day after a misstep.
Things had started out well, however, for Bubba Ray & D-Von at The Biggest Event of the Summer.

Competing in the Barclays Center, the same building where they returned to WWE a year ago, The Dudleys used their brute force (and a blindsiding forearm) to counteract their opponents’ speed and agility.

The ingenuity of Zayn & Neville nonetheless showed through, especially when Neville leapt off his partner’s back to connect with a spinning aerial attack reminiscent of his Red Arrow finisher.

Bubba put his team back in the fight, but missed the mark on a huge senton splash off the middle rope.

Zayn displayed his strength moments later, hitting D-Von with a Blue Thunder Bomb, only for Bubba to stomp out The Underdog from the Undergound’s pin attempt.

The Dudleys returned fire with their signature back suplex/neckbreaker combination, but this time, Neville broke up the fall.

When it looked like Bubba Ray & D-Von were able to dismantle The Man That Gravity Forgot with a 3-D, Neville sprang out of the move and dodged a subsequent clothesline from Bubba, causing the brothers to collide.

Zayn was quick to take advantage, nailing Bubba with a Helluva Kick and setting him up perfectly for Neville’s match-winning Red Arrow.

With this big win under their belt, what’s next for the high-flying former NXT Champions? Just as important, how will the brawlers from Dudleyville rebound from their latest stumble?

Sheamus def. Cesaro (Best of Seven Series Match No. 1)

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 075_SS_08212016ej_0493--dd32166975be02687e6cb22787e62bde

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In round one of what will be a Best of Seven Series, Sheamus scored the all-important first victory against Cesaro at The Biggest Event of the Summer.

The win was a welcome shift in momentum for The Celtic Warrior, who was beaten twice by The Swiss Superman in recent weeks on Raw.

Both Superstars went into the bout with chips on their shoulders and something to prove, and they wasted no time getting to work dishing out one punishing move after another.

As the tooth-and-nail fight waged, Cesaro took Sheamus for a dizzying Cesaro Swing followed by an attempted Sharpshooter.

But The Celtic Warrior was able to break the hold by grabbing the ring rope.
Striking back – perhaps in unorthodox style – Sheamus disoriented Cesaro with an eye gouge.

With The Swiss Superman vulnerable, Sheamus slammed him into the ring post and finally dropped him with a Brogue Kick for the win.

The WWE Universe witnessed exactly what Cesaro predicted in the SummerSlam Kickoff show: “Less talk, more wrestling.”

Certainly, there is a lot more to look forward to in this exciting Best of Seven Series between two of Raw’s most physical Superstars.

Chris Jericho & Kevin Owens def. Enzo Amore & Big Cass

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 113_SS_08212016ej_0827--f4479a8a1a8cda6182975eddbb49b488

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Chris Jericho & Kevin Owens spoiled Enzo Amore & Big Cass’ New York City homecoming, with Owens tossing Enzo into a decisive Codebreaker.

Before the disappointing ending to their night, however, Enzo and Cass got plenty of Brooklyn love as they led the crowd in a sing-along of famous tunes by iconic New Yorkers like Frank Sinatra and The Notorious B.I.G. Enzo even sported the New York Yankees–style pinstripes for the bout.

That hometown advantage willed Enzo & Cass to take over early, as the 7-footer launched his partner from the ring to take out Jeri-KO on the ringside floor.

But the newly formed duo took firm control after Owens distracted Enzo, allowing Jericho to connect with a kick from the top rope.

The Canadian tandem then isolated Enzo from his partner, blocking his attempts to tag in Big Cass at every turn.

When Enzo finally reached his partner, it seemed momentum had swung in their favor.
Cass laid out Jericho — the legal man — and Owens before tagging Enzo back into the bout and setting up for the Bada Boom Shakalaka, which Owens blocked at the last minute.

With Enzo reeling, Owens took out Cass on the outside, then rolled back into the ring to launch “Muscles Marinara” into a decisive Codebreaker.

Jeri-KO lived up to its own hype, and the Raw tag team scene may never — ever — be the same again.

Charlotte def. WWE Women’s Champion Sasha Banks

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 131_SS_08212016ej_1111--72c39de9b65469cd0b711558cd70b607

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Sasha Banks could not counter Charlotte’s ruthlessness at SummerSlam, where the second-generation challenger picked up her second WWE Women’s Championship without the aid of her protégé Dana Brooke.

After Sasha seemed to take control of the bout in the early goings, Charlotte managed to trap the champion in the corner and drop her from the top rope to the canvas, folding Sasha in half and injuring The Boss’ lower back.

Sasha attempted to fight through the pain, but each near-fall seemed to take a little bit more out of the champion as she not only defended her title, but the dream she’d chased since she was 10 years old.

It was that perseverance that saved her from a top-rope Razor’s Edge maneuver from Charlotte, which Sasha reversed into a stunning hurricanrana.

Once back in the fight, Sasha exchanged clubbing blows and stinging slaps with the cunning challenger.

Sasha soon had Charlotte on the defensive, hitting her with double knees in the corner, a rope-assisted Boston crab and an aerial assault to the floor that brought Barclays Center to its feet.

Evading Natural Selection, Sasha nearly put Charlotte away with an excruciating Bank Statement that pushed the challenger to the point of desperation.
Charlotte finally connected with Natural Selection moments later for a two-count.

Frustration mounting, Charlotte sought to humiliate the champion with more slaps across the face, and it was this brazen show of disrespect that spurred Sasha to trap her opponent in a match-ending Bank Statement.

Unfortunately, Charlotte was able to reverse the maneuver into a pinning predicament that forced Sasha’s shoulders to the canvas.
Three seconds later, Charlotte became WWE Women’s Champion a second time.

Charlotte, who has now won 14 out of her 16 pay-per-view matches in WWE, now looks to surpass her 114-day WWE Women’s Title reign as Sasha remains in close pursuit of the crown jewel of Raw’s Women’s division.
But for now, anyway, The Boss bows to “the queen.”

Intercontinental Champion The Miz def. Apollo Crews

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 20160821_SumSlam_Apollo--41ffffa406f137768a96d3d33ad13790

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Apollo Crews was determined to walk out of Brooklyn with the Intercontinental Championship — and make sure The Miz remembered his name.
Unfortunately, a late slip-up by the upstart ensured that The Awesome One remained the champion.

Just one year after he made his NXT debut in the Barclays Center, Crews found himself in WWE and in a high-profile title bout, but Miz did his best to keep the rookie grounded, wearing his rival down on the mat.

When The A–Lister decided to take flight himself, he dove right into a picture-perfect dropkick from Crews.
That was the opening that Crews needed to take control of the bout.

In a display of power and agility, Crews tossed The Miz around with ease, cut him off at every corner, and took to the air in pursuit of the Intercontinental Championship.

However, the upstart made the mistake of taking his eyes off The Miz and turning his attention to Maryse at ringside.

That misstep gave The A-Lister the chance he needed to blindside his challenger and connect with The Skull-Crushing Finale to retain his title.

The Intercontinental Champion may have been able to celebrate a close victory with his wife, but in the back of his head, he has to know that he may not be so lucky the next time he does battle with Apollo Crews.

AJ Styles def. John Cena

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 196_SS_08212016ej_2209--0c83c36309550bd52a143605b165e26c

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – If you ask AJ Styles, John Cena’s time is up, and AJ’s time is now.
And it certainly appeared that way at SummerSlam, where The Phenomenal One bested “The Face that Runs the Place” in singles competition for the second time in as many pay-per-views.

Unlike their classic match at Money in the Bank two months earlier, Styles dispatched Cena without the interference of his henchmen, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson.

The three were separated due to the brand split, with Styles heading to SmackDown Live and his Club cohorts casting long shadows on Raw.

Turns out, Styles managed to weather the onslaught of the 15-time World Champion with resorting to underhanded hijinks.

The capacity crowd inside the Barclays Center was hyped for the match from the opening bell when they started competing chants of “AJ Styles!” and “Let’s Go Cena!” Their enthusiasm would prove well-placed.

The Phenomenal One first punished Cena by slamming his back down on the rigid apron early.
Cena answered with a surprising dropkick.

Styles would go on to endure a Tornado DDT, a legdrop off the top rope and an Attitude Adjustment off the second rope.

For his part, Cena displayed his legendary toughness by overcoming a Styles Clash, a Spinout Powerbomb and a modified Attitude Adjustment.

Unfortunately for the WWE Universe, only one man would walk out a winner.
After a valiant effort in what was an instant classic bout, Cena finally succumbed in the wake of a second Styles Clash quickly followed by a Phenomenal Forearm.

Ever since his WWE debut at Royal Rumble, Styles has ridden a rocket ship to the stratosphere of WWE.
And with this latest victory at SummerSlam, for The Phenomenal One, the sky’s the limit.

Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson def. WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day via disqualification

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 20160821_SumSlam_NewDay2--6363ff39430c05b122a46aa06abb0d17

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A split decision to save Jon Stewart from a possible bout of “Ringpostitis” cost The New Day their chance at a SummerSlam victory, but not their historic WWE Tag Team Championship reign.

Big E’s impromptu rescue of the former “Daily Show” host resulted in a loss via disqualification for his New Day partners Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods against Gallows & Anderson.

The returning strongman cost his allies the match by attacking the challengers before they could execute their “Ringpostitis” plans for Stewart, who had introduced himself as an honorary New Day member earlier in the evening.

Of course, the tandem title clash at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center came about only after Gallows & Anderson injured Big E in an ambush of The New Day on Raw.

That attack put the assailants in the crosshairs of Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods, who were promised a chance to settle the score at SummerSlam — as long as the WWE Tag Team Championship was on the line.

With Big E initially on the sidelines, Stewart, a certified star who’s no stranger to stirring things up at SummerSlam, stepped into the ring to make an important announcement: He would attempt to fill the Superstar strongman’s shoes at the Biggest Event of the Summer.

He then showed his colors by removing a grey hooded sweatshirt to reveal a bright blue New Day T-shirt.

The challengers, who headed to the ring wearing lab coats and requested to be described as doctors for the evening, opened the match by targeting Kofi Kingston.

Karl Anderson traded blows with Kingston at the outset, but could not establish momentum against the veteran member of The New Day.
Gallows also struggled to stem the tide against the reigning WWE Tag Team Champions.

A mid-match brawl created an opening for Gallows & Anderson, who promptly dropped Kingston with the Magic Killer.

As they stepped forward to finish off the Ghanian grappler, Stewart, who watched the action from The New Day’s corner, entered the ring to protect his honorary partner.

At that point, Gallows & Anderson decided to target their intruder, cornering him before dragging the Emmy Award-winning entertainer across the ring in hopes of afflicting him with “Ringpostitis.”

Before the challengers could do the deed, though, a healthy Big E rushed out from backstage and began striking Stewart’s tormentors until they were subdued.

The returning strongman’s efforts cost The New Day the win, but saved their WWE Tag Team Championship as the match result was decided because of a disqualification.

Because their tandem titles did not change hands, The New Day’s historic reign as WWE Tag Team Champions will continue.

If they can keep their success going for 48 hours past SummerSlam, the larger-than-life trio will officially celebrate the one-year anniversary of their title-clinching victory at SummerSlam 2015.

WWE World Champion Dean Ambrose def. Dolph Ziggler

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 20160821_SumSlam_ZigglerAmbrose--91e58df92c0d6b1b7ced104da939a84a

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Dolph Ziggler certainly made every moment of his WWE World Championship opportunity count, but despite an incredible effort, he ultimately fell to Dean Ambrose in a tense, heart-pounding contest.

Channeling his NCAA career as Kent State’s winningest wrestler, Ziggler started the bout by keeping the champion grounded and attempting to score an early pinfall.

The Showoff maintained incredible momentum until Ambrose countered a suplex and threw Ziggler from the ring.

Battling on the outside, the WWE World Champion took control of the bout with high-impact maneuvers that kept his opponent on the defensive.

Confident in his strategy, The Lunatic Fringe took to the top rope but was taken out mid-air with an expertly planted dropkick.

The well-documented perseverance of both Superstars was on full display after a cringe-worthy double clothesline brought the action to a screeching halt.

Ambrose managed to recover and unleash another offensive that Ziggler weathered long enough to apply a sleeper hold and spill the action to the outside.

Ziggler narrowly missed a chance to score a pinfall following a huge superkick, and nearly won the championship after countering Dirty Deeds with a Zig Zag.

Regaining his composure, Ambrose ascended to the top rope again, but was met by Ziggler where they engaged in a tense exchange of blows and counterattacks.

Thinking he had the upper hand, Ziggler tried to execute his patented facebuster from the top, but Ambrose countered, landing on his feet and planting his opponent with Dirty Deeds for the victory.

Despite his defeat, Ziggler definitely made the most of his opportunity.
Nevertheless, the unorthodox and unhinged nature of the WWE World Champion won the night.

Nikki Bella, Natalya & Alexa Bliss def. Becky Lynch, Naomi, & Carmella

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 20160821_SumSlam_womens--15beea069863f2c29fdf3878278ad981

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — With Eva Marie recuperating from anxiety and stress brought on by the WWE Universe, many thought Natalya and Alexa Bliss were at a disadvantage heading into what was supposed to be a Six-Woman Tag Team Match at SummerSlam.

However, the third-generation Superstar and the SmackDown Live newcomer had an ace up their sleeves to even the odds.

Nikki Bella joined the two competitors, returning from a neck injury that kept her out of action for nearly a year to guide her team to victory over Becky Lynch, Naomi & Carmella.

The Barclays Center came unglued when the star of the upcoming E! reality show “Total Bellas” arrived, but it did not seem to give her team the upper hand in the early moments of the match, as Natalya fell victim to exciting offense from The Princess of Staten Island and Naomi.

The tide turned when Nikki tagged into the match and planted Carmella into the canvas with a spinebuster, then showed that she was feeling “Fearless” and in peak physical condition by banging out a few push-ups.

The trio of Bella, Bliss & Natalya trapped Carmella in their corner, wearing down The Princess of Staten Island and preventing her partners from tagging into the bout.

Carmella was able to scurry away from Natalya and send the Irish Lass-Kicker into action.
Becky hurled her rivals around with aplomb as bodies flew across the ring in a flurry of Bexploder Suplexes.

The bout soon broke down, with all six women brawling in the squared circle.
When the dust settled, Nikki Bella clobbered The Princess of Staten Island with a hard elbow, following up with a TKO to pick up the victory.

The former two-time Divas Champion has made a statement to the rest of the women on the SmackDown Live roster — Nikki Bella is back and better than ever.

Finn Bálor def. Seth Rollins to become the first WWE Universal Champion

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 346_SS_08212016ej_3871--fd7df606d20fb5025735da1579bd3460

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Finn Bálor first stepped in a WWE ring as a Raw Superstar four weeks ago.
Tonight at SummerSlam, he left the squared circle as the first WWE Universal Champion, defeating Seth Rollins with the Coup de Grace to capture the new title and building to a legacy of success that’s spanned Europe, Japan and NXT.

Moments before history was made, Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon and General Manager Mick Foley unveiled the new WWE Universal Championship.

And then the mind-games began as The Demon King stalked to the ring through a thick cloud of red smoke with a neon green tongue painted on his chest and a giant eye on his back.

Rollins could not get away from his opponent early on. Bálor blindsided him when the opening bell rang.

When Rollins rolled to the outside to catch his breath, Bálor caught him with a senton over the top rope.
He then began to target Rollins’ surgically repaired left knee.

Bálor had Rollins reeling, until “The Man” powerbombed his opponent into the ringside barricade, flipping momentum entirely.

Rollins tried to slow down The Demon King by targeting his nose.
He repeatedly punched and kicked Bálor’s face, then used his wrist tape to stretch Bálor’s nose even further.

With The Demon King struggling to breathe after the attacks, Rollins went in for the kill with a Frog Splash from across the ring.
Bálor somehow kicked out of the subsequent pin, then regained control by countering Rollins with a devastating DDT.

The Demon King was rolling with a dropkick on the ring apron, and Rollins’ attempt to slow his momentum with a Pedigree turned into a backdrop reversal, a Pelé Kick and 1916 — Finn’s underhook DDT.

When Rollins kicked out, Bálor positioned him in the corner for the Coup de Grace, bringing the Barclays Center crowd to its feet.
But Rollins had the move scouted perfectly, rolling away from Bálor’s feet at the last moment and pulling him in a Triangle Lock.

Since the Universal Champion could only be crowned by pinfall or submission, a rope break was not an option for Bálor, who struggled to maneuver out of the hold.

He finally escaped by rolling outside the ring, but Rollins dragged him back in and powerbombed him into the turnbuckle.
“You think you can hang with me, Demon King?” Rollins asked.
“This is my ring.”

Unable to keep Bálor down, Rollins dug deep into his arsenal, using a small package driver to plant The Demon King to the mat.
That only served to light a fire in Bálor.

The Demon King inexplicably kicked out, then went on the attack. His dropkick into the barricade helped to set up a top-rope stomp to the back of Rollins’ head.
Rollins rolled away from the Coup de Grace, though, and drilled Bálor into the canvas with a Pedigree.

When Bálor kicked out yet again, Rollins shook his head in disbelief. His best moves couldn’t keep Bálor down for the three-count.
Rollins had one more trick left, climbing to the top rope for a Phoenix Splash. But Bálor dodged the high-risk move and greeted Rollins with a dropkick.

Rollins landed on the mat in perfect position for a Coup de Grace, and The Demon King rushed to the top rope.
“The Man” met him there, though, leading to a ridiculous yet heart-stopping chain.

Rollins superplexed Bálor, then rolled into the Pedigree.
Bálor countered the Pedigree, though, before dropkicking him from turnbuckle to turnbuckle.

The fury allowed Bálor to finally connect with the Coup de Grace to secure the three-count and become the inaugural WWE Universal Champion.

When Mick Foley drafted Finn Bálor, he said it was “with an eye toward the future.”
With Raw’s top prize around The Demon King’s waist, it’s clear the future is now.

The United States Championship Match did not take place after Roman Reigns rendered Rusev unable to compete

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 385_SS_08212016ej_4405--3580ebbbd688d1d041aee9461d1f80db

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – What started as a pre-match attack by United States Champion Rusev quickly transformed into an out-on-control onslaught by Roman Reigns that brought SummerSlam’s U.S. Title showdown to a crashing halt before it even got started.

Following the infamous “cake incident” on Raw, which saw Rusev’s new bride Lana embarrassed and covered in baked goods, an irate Rusev came to The Biggest Event of the Summer hungry for retribution.

Unable to keep his cool, The Bulgarian Brute unloaded on his adversary before the bell even rang.
Unfortunately for Rusev, the chaos ultimately blew back on him in excruciating fashion as Reigns absolutely snapped, ignoring a slew of officials as he unleased a hellacious counter-assault that left the titleholder completely dismantled.

When Reigns finally relented and headed to the back, WWE medical personal determined that the United States Champion was unable to compete.
Then, as the battered titleholder — whom officials later confirmed had suffered bruised ribs — began to make his way up the ramp with some assistance, Reigns reemerged.

Apparently unsatisfied with the punishment he had unleashed on Rusev, the unglued Superstar leveled Rusev with a wicked Spear and, in the process, made it clear that whenever the two competitors do finally meet for the title, it will not be a civilized encounter.

Brock Lesnar def. Randy Orton via TKO

Summer Slam 2016 - Full Results 408_SS_08212016ej_4767--d9e197f045c12eb2046432a155468896

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The first pay-per-view clash between Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton was billed as a dream match 15 years in the making.
It only took about 15 minutes to turn into a nightmare when Lesnar pounded his opponent into a gory mess, earning a near-unprecedented TKO victory over The Apex Predator before destroying an authority figure to cap off his assault.

The shocking ruling by WWE officials was a merciful conclusion to what was easily the most impressive instance of snake extermination since St. Patrick.
Lesnar made it clear early on he had abandoned all pretense of defeating Orton, opting instead to conquer him in the most medieval sense of the word.

In many ways, it was a logical culmination of both Lesnar’s last four years in WWE and this match in particular, which began with Brock charging Orton into the corner while The Viper pounded away at his opponent’s back in hopes of creating some separation.

Orton knew going into the match that his outta-nowhere equalizer of the RKO would be his only hope.
Unfortunately for him, the wind was sucked from his sails when an early attempt at the move fell flat, literally, as Lesnar simply stepped backwards and shoved Orton to the mat from midair the second The Viper sprang up to hit it.

With Orton having taken the full brunt of his own maneuver, Lesnar administered a German suplex before charging him into the corner and suplexing him again.
Brock refused to allow The Apex Predator to gain any kind of momentum — let alone the breathing room he would require to connect with an RKO.

Lesnar took Orton on this grisly tour of Suplex City for six cycles before The Viper rolled out of the ring and tried to throw hands.
He got a body slam atop the SmackDown Live announce table for his troubles.

When Orton attempted to seek shelter in the front row, The Beast threw him like dead weight back onto the table, which crumbled beneath Orton.

The Beast briefly took the fight back into the ring for a seventh suplex, before returning to the outside and stripping the Raw announce table of its trappings in order to prepare it for annihilation.

Ironically, this led to the one point in the match where The Viper seemed like he might pull it off.
Before Lesnar could drive Orton through the table, The Apex Predator uncoiled with a wicked RKO that flattened The Conqueror.
The Viper came out smiling, if not entirely upright, from the exchange, and suddenly the match was a ballgame.

Sensing he had an opportunity to turn the tide, Orton quickly hauled his foe onto the ropes and struck with his hanging DDT before hitting a second RKO.
It only earned him a two-count, but it left Lesnar stunned all the same, and Orton had his breathing room for the RKO … and then some.

“And then some,” of course, turned out to be the dreaded punt to the head, which Orton lined up and was about a shoelace away from landing before Lesnar snatched him up mid-stride into the F-5.
The Viper had enough fight in him to do what almost none have and kick out of the dreaded maneuver, but had he just taken the three-count he might have been better off.

While Orton attempted to recover, Lesnar removed his gloves and pounced, driving his bare fists and one particularly gruesome forearm into his opponent’s face, refusing to stop until The Apex Predator was busted open.

As the WWE Universe slowly caught sight of the extent of Lesnar’s brutality — Orton’s face, and the mat, seemed to change color before their eyes and Orton could do little more than feebly try to protect himself — it became clear the match had devolved beyond a fight and into a mugging.

What’s worse is that it was one that didn’t show any signs of stopping. When WWE officials swarmed the ring to tend to The Viper’s injuries, Lesnar backed off for a moment before attacking again, and again and again until the bout was finally called as a TKO in favor of The Anomaly.
(Orton would ultimately receive ten staples as a result of the attack.)

And then he kept punching again, over the protestations of Paul Heyman until SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon rushed the ring to try and call Lesnar off.
To Lesnar’s credit, he obliged … but only after giving the prodigal son an F-5 for his troubles.

By the time Lesnar walked out, the crowd was stunned into silence (or disgust), Orton and his would-be savior were left in ruins, and The Beast himself seemed only mildly amused that anybody thought it would end differently.
